We have found the Mercedes of all scooters!

Just as we were preparing to write an article about scooters, all by accident, we came across a Hungarian(!) manufacturer. And what a manufacturer! The tiny Hungarian company makes unique wooden scooters, or ’boardies’, as they call their product, for global exports. We became so fascinated with this novel vehicle that we contacted its maker and will now tell you about it briefly.

The Boardy was developed and is manufactured in Hungary. Having used a scooter in the city for 10 years, its designer got bored with the fact that poor road surfaces and cobble stones limited the usability of his favourite means of transport. This led him to develop a new type of scooter – one which was safe, comfortable and fast to ride on any type of surface (even wet).

What makes the Boardy unique is its frame, made fully from flexible wood-fiberglass composite (in some models carbon is used), which ensures shock absorption of the front and rear wheel. As a result, this scooter rides comfortably and smoothly on surfaces where most other types cannot (such as cobble stones, gravel or grass).

Its developer made the first Boardies for himself and his family, but he soon found out that there was a much broader demand for the new vehicle: when he first took it with him on a holiday, people kept stopping him in the street to ask about the Boardy, and someone from Monaco even ordered one on the spot – from the company that was yet to be established at the time. The firm was then founded upon the developer’s return home from the holiday, and production started in the manufactory. Orders soon began to come from across the globe. Due to the manufacturer’s limited production capacity, there is a waiting list for the Boardy, but if everything goes well, manufactural production will soon be replaced by serial production.

The wooden frame and the anodized aluminium parts lend the boardy a look unprecedented among scooters. The feeling is a combination of a boat, skateboard, retro and modern at the same time.

The key considerations in designing the Boardy were low weight (5.8kg), compact size, foldability, handbrake and for the scooter to be suitable for use even by someone who is 2 meters tall and weighs way over 100 kg. In short, we can say that the Boardy has everything to be a scooter for adults. At the same time, its board lies very low, which is a major factor in the riding experience: using the Boardy is much less tiring than riding traditional scooters. You can travel tens of kilometres on the Boardy without stopping, and you will not get exhausted.

Its parts, details and quality of assembling make the Boardy a premium class Hungarian product. Its international customers call it ‘The Mercedes of all scooters’.

After all the above, mention must be made about the price of the Boardy. The basic model’s price is 500 euro, which is close to that of a medium category bicycle. Of course, more special models cost a little more, up to 650 euro. This explains why most of the Boardies so far have been sold to customers in the US and Western Europe, but some went to Moscow, and even to South Africa.
