Boardy “THE BOARDSCOOTER” is a Hungarian invention, it is manufactured in Budapest, Hungary, most materials and parts come from European suppliers. The self-supporting flexible (throughout its entire length) wooden frame was invented in 2015 by one of our founders Balazs, who has a physics degree. After 10 years of kickscooting, he got tired of being unable to use his traditional kickscooter anywhere, for example at paving stone area in a park. His expectations were clear:

The first Boardy prototype was finished in September 2015. The flexible board was made with a unique press tool, and the wheels borrowed from a kids’ bicycle. Other frame parts were made in a tiny workshop.

During the first test ride it was already apparent that the novel frame structure provided an impressive riding experience. Boardy had maximum comfort on all terrain and was capable of high speed thanks to the 12″ wheels. In the next few months, we improved a few things on the board, and on the folding mechanism, and the first three Boardys were completed by Christmas 2015 as family gifts.

From that Christmas the three Boardys were taken on every family outing. On the first trip to France, the Boardys created a big sensation on the beach, people wanted to try them out, and some wanted to order one immediately, even though, serial production was not yet planned then.

After returning home from France, Balázs and his lawyer friend Andras founded the company, and soon a small series of Boardys was completed, which were sold in a few days.

The first Boardy was delivered to US in September 2016, and the first Boardy was delivered to RSA (South Africa) in October, so there was a lot of interest in Boardys all over the world.

In 2018 an investor stepped in, so further developments were possible. We were able to move into a larger manufacturing workshop, and developed the mudguard, the XL model, the Lite model and the kids’ model.

Unfortunately, COVID-19 seriously affected us. The bicycle industry collapsed, parts and raw materials became missing items. For example, tires suddenly had a 2-year waiting list, but it was the same with spokes and bearings. We were not able to continue production in such a situation. Despite the hard timese we have continuously believed in our brand.

The new Boardy

We managed to restart the company in 2023 with a new team member, a friend of us, the computer scientist Zoltan. We completely redesigned Boardy with one year of development work. Not a single part of it has been left untouched. The new Boardy is stronger, wider, taller, and its design is more clear-out. Every part got a little better. The new board is manifactured by a 60 tons press tool, and the new frame parts are CNC machined from one single piece of materials, in order to minimize the number of welds.

From 2024 we only produce the top model with closed industrial bearings, brake booster, raised handlebars, and a load capacity of 150 kg (as the former XXL model). Because we want to give our customers the BEST.

Sustainability was important in the design of the New Boardy, which is why we no longer use epoxy resin in the board and use only paper packaging.

The first New Boardys were delivered in the summer of 2024. Since then, we have carefully increased production capacity, but in 2025 we already plan to produce a significant amount. We hope our story is just at the beginning, and soon the “New Boardy experience” will be well known all over the world.
