Is a single brake enough for a kick scooter?
For normal* kick scooter riding, where you use muscle power to reach speeds around 5–10 mph (10–15 km/h), a single brake is typically more than enough to safely reduce speed or stop quickly.
While most scooters use a basic rear friction brake (which can lose effectiveness in wet weather), Boardy scooters are equipped with a hand-operated BMX U-brake on the front wheel. This system, combined with premium silicone BMX brake pads, delivers powerful, consistent braking — even in rain or slippery conditions.
* Of course, if you plan on extreme downhill riding at much higher speeds, that’s a different sport altogether!
